Purpose

Testosterone Test measures the amount of testosterone in blood.

Patient Preparation

Patients should stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours before sample collection.

Samples

1ml with a minimum volume of 0.7ml of serum or plasma collected in a Gel-barrier, red-top or green top tube (lithium heparin). Avoid using EDTA, oxalate or citrate plasma. Transfer separated serum to a plastic transport tube if a red top tube is used. The sample should be refrigerated.

Diseases / Diagnostic indicators

High levels of testosterone in females are associated with hirsuitism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), anovulation, amenorrhea, virilization, tumors of the adrenal cortices, masculinizing tumors of the ovary and and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). High testosterone levels in males are associated with acne, Klinefelter syndrome, headaches, low sperm count, liver or heart problems, excessive body hair, high libido, infertility, insomnia, high appettite, aggressive or risk-taking behaviors, hypertension, weight gain, mood swings, swollen limbs, and enlarged prostate. Low levels of testosterone in men are associated with erectile dysfunction, Kinefelter syndrome, small testes, enlarged breasts, low sperm count, anemia, low libido, low energy, osteoporosis, and difficulty gaining muscle mass.
