Peripheral Blood Film – PBF
Synonyms
Peripheral blood smear.
Purpose
This test is used to assess the blood picture microscopically. It checks for any abnormalities in the red cells, platelets, and white blood cells.
Patient Preparation
There is no special preparation required for this test.
Samples
4 ml of whole blood should be collected in EDTA tube (purple top). Samples should be mixed gently by inverting eight times immediately after collection. For proper mixing of blood with the EDTA. Samples should be refrigerated if sampling is not done within 24hrs.
Reference Range
Normal morphology and appearance of the blood cells.
Results Turnaround
Within 24 hours after sample collection.

It is a screening test for blood and bone marrow disorders. It is also used to monitor treatment for haematological diseases.
