Immunoglobulins Test

Immunoglobulins Test

Synonyms

IgA, IgE, IgG, IgM

Purpose

The Immunoglobulins Test is a blood test that measures the levels of different types of antibodies, IgA, IgE, IgG, and IgM, in the blood. These antibodies play a vital role in the body’s immune response by identifying and neutralizing harmful bacteria, viruses, and allergens.

Measuring immunoglobulin levels helps assess the strength and functionality of the immune system. Abnormal levels can indicate a range of conditions, including immune deficiencies, autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, and allergic reactions.

For a full diagnostic picture, the test can be performed alongside Complete Blood Count (CBC), Protein Electrophoresis, Allergy testing, HIV testing, and Autoimmune panels (e.g., ANA).

Patient Preparation

The patient should avoid biotin supplement intake at least 72 hours before the test.

Samples

3 mL of serum collected in a red top tube or gel barrier tube. Transfer separated serum to a plastic transport tube if a red top tube is used. Avoid hemolysis and lipemia. Samples with macroglobulins or cryoglobulins should be drawn and held at 37 °C, while those with cold agglutinins refrigerated before serum separation from the clot.

Diseases / Diagnostic indicators

The results of the Immunoglobulins Test can help indicate how well your immune system is functioning:

Elevated IgG levels may suggest a chronic infection (like hepatitis or HIV), chronic inflammation, or autoimmune conditions. They can also be seen in chronic liver disease.

Low IgG, IgA, or IgM levels may point to an immune deficiency, protein-losing enteropathy, nephrotic syndrome, or certain blood cancers such as lymphomas or leukemias.

Elevated IgE levels often indicate allergic reactions, asthma, or parasitic infections.

Elevated IgM might suggest an acute infection or Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare type of blood cancer. For more on the Immunoglobulin test, read this study.
