Chloride Blood Test
Synonyms
None
Purpose
The Chloride Blood Test measures the level of chloride ions in the blood, an essential electrolyte that helps maintain the body’s acid-base balance, fluid levels, and electrical neutrality.
This test is important for assessing overall metabolic function, especially in patients with dehydration, kidney issues, or acid-base disorders.
It is typically performed alongside other electrolyte tests such as sodium, potassium, and bicarbonate (CO₂) to give a full picture of a person’s electrolyte balance and to help diagnose underlying conditions affecting the kidneys, lungs, or metabolic system.
Patient Preparation
No special preparations required.
Samples
1ml with a minimum volume of 0.7ml of serum or plasma collected in a Gel-barrier, red-top, or green top tube (lithium heparin). Avoid using EDTA, oxalate, or citrate plasma. Serum or plasma should be separated within 45 minutes of sample collection. Store the sample at room temperature.

Reference Range
96-106mmol/L
Results Turnaround
Within 24 hours after sample collection.
Diseases / Diagnostic indicators
The results of a Chloride Blood Test can indicate different health conditions based on whether the levels are high or low.
Elevated chloride levels (hyperchloremia) may suggest conditions such as dehydration, kidney problems like renal tubular acidosis, or hormonal imbalances such as hyperparathyroidism.
On the other hand, low chloride levels (hypochloremia) can be seen in cases of overhydration, chronic respiratory issues, Addison’s disease, or metabolic alkalosis. These results help healthcare providers assess electrolyte imbalances and identify underlying causes for further investigation or treatment.
