Purpose
The Triglycerides Test is a blood test that measures the amount of triglycerides in the bloodstream. Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) the body uses for energy. However, elevated levels can increase the risk of heart disease and may signal underlying metabolic issues.
This test is important for assessing cardiovascular risk, especially when combined with other lipid panel results. High triglyceride levels are often associated with conditions such as obesity, poorly controlled diabetes, hypothyroidism, liver or kidney disease, and excessive alcohol intake.
Other tests commonly performed alongside the test include Total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and HbA1c.
Patient Preparation
The patient should fast overnight preceding sample collection.
Samples
1ml with a minimum volume of 0.7ml of Serum or plasma collected in a Gel-barrier, red-top, or green-top tube (lithium heparin). Avoid using EDTA, oxalate, or citrate plasma. Plasma or serum should be separated within 45 minutes of sample collection. Store the sample at room temperature.

Reference Range
Normal: <150mg/Dl, borderline high; 150-199mg/dL, high: 200-499 mg/dL, very high: >500mg/Dl
Results Turnaround
Within 24 hours of receipt of samples.
Diseases / Diagnostic indicators
Elevated triglyceride levels may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and are commonly seen in conditions such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, and pancreatitis. Very high levels (typically above 500 mg/dL) may lead to acute pancreatitis.
Conversely, abnormally low triglyceride levels, though less common, can be associated with malnutrition, hyperthyroidism, or certain genetic disorders affecting fat metabolism.
The results help healthcare providers assess lipid-related health risks and guide treatment decisions, including dietary changes, exercise, or medication to lower triglycerides and improve overall heart health. For more on the Triglycerides Test, read this study.
