LDL Cholesterol Test

LDL Cholesterol Test

Synonyms

LDL cholesterol, Direct

Purpose

The LDL Cholesterol Test is a blood test used to measure the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as “bad” cholesterol, in the bloodstream. It plays a crucial role in assessing the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke.

Elevated LDL cholesterol contributes to the buildup of plaque in arteries, leading to atherosclerosis and increased cardiovascular risk. Monitoring LDL levels helps guide dietary, lifestyle, and treatment decisions aimed at reducing heart disease risk.

To provide a complete picture of lipid health, this test is often ordered alongside HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) Cholesterol Test, Total Cholesterol Test, Triglycerides Test, Lipid Profile / Lipid Panel, High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) Test. These combined results help determine overall cardiovascular risk and guide medical intervention.

Patient Preparation

The patient is not required to fast before blood collection.

Samples

1ml with a minimum volume of 0.7ml of Serum or plasma collected in a Gel-barrier, red-top, or green-top tube (lithium heparin). Avoid using EDTA, oxalate, or citrate plasma. Separate plasma or serum within 45 minutes of sample collection. Store the sample at room temperature.

Diseases / Diagnostic indicators

High LDL cholesterol levels:

May indicate an increased risk of atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits build up in the arteries. This buildup can restrict blood flow and lead to serious conditions such as:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Stroke
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Possible Outcomes of the Test

High LDL levels:

  • Suggest an elevated risk of cardiovascular events. Your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, or cholesterol-lowering medication.

Normal LDL levels:

  • Indicate a lower risk of heart disease, especially when accompanied by healthy levels of HDL and triglycerides.

Low LDL levels:

  • Rare, but may be associated with certain genetic conditions, malnutrition, or liver disease.

Monitoring LDL cholesterol is essential for preventing long-term complications and maintaining cardiovascular health. For more on LDL Cholesterol Testing, read this study.
