Samples can be obtained from a handkerchief with nasal secretions or directly from the nasal cavity. The aim is to obtain the cells present on the surface and within the epithelial lining of the nasal mucosa. Nasal secretions have a 90% success rate, provide a minimally invasive method of sample collection and require no anesthesia during sample collection. However, the cell yield is highly variable due to small sample of cells obtained from the secretions.
1. Wash your hands and ensure they are dry
2. Take a sterile cotton swab and collect cells from the mucosa by moving it from the anterior to posterior part of the nose.
3. Place the swab in a clean dry envelope.
4. Label the envelope accordingly(name, date of collection and relationship).
5. Send the envelope to the laboratory for analysis.
6. Alternatively, obtain the handkerchief that contains blown secretion.
7. Place the handkerchief or tissue in a clean envelope.
8. Label the envelope well and send it to the laboratory for analysis.
9. Avoid body contact with the handkerchief.
10. Samples should not contain dirt
