Galactosemia Type I

Galactosemia is a disorder that prevents the body from processing a simple sugar called galactose into energy.

Signs and Symptoms
Type I: This is the most common and most severe form of the disorder. If infants are not promptly treated complications can arise within the first few days of life. Complications include feeding difficulties, lack of energy, failure to thrive, jaundice, liver damage and bleeding.Type II and III are caused by mutations in the GALE and GALT genes.
